Transcranial direct current stimulation

Transcranial direct current stimulation is the therapeutic impact of constant low direct current on the nerve cells of the brain. We use a modified Western European technique, that is, tDCS (transcranial Direct Current Stimulation).

The essence of the method is as follows: a neurologist examines the affected areas of the brain or spinal cord and, by applying an absolutely individual course of treatment, with a help of very low current makes healthy cells of the brain or spinal cord to take over the functions of the dead neurons. That is, there is a process of modeling new functional connections in the brain or spinal cord.

For example, with stroke (brain catastrophe, accompanied by acute impairment of cerebral circulation), a certain part of the brain cells die. Our brain is arranged in such a way that sometimes even one millimeter of its damage leads to loss of motor ability, speech, etc. Such a situation can cause disability to a person.

The task of the neurologist is to find this affected area of the brain and, using tDCS method, to help brain to compensate the loss, thereby bringing the person back to full life.

DO YOU NEED IT?

TDCS is prescribed to patients with:

  • Consequences of strokes;
  • Consequences of traumatic brain injury;
  • Consequences of spinal trauma;
  • Epilepsy;
  • Disturbance of the function of the pelvic organs (incontinence of urine, feces);
  • Memory and concentration of attention impairment.

WHAT PROBLEM DOES IT SOLVE?

The human nervous system is a community of neurons, interacting with each other with a help of very low current. TDCS is the stimulation of certain areas of the brain with a special device that produces very low, i.e., natural for the human body, current.

The amperage of the current used in tDCS is dozen of times lower than the current used in electrophoresis and phonophoresis and is equal to the electrical signal neurons interact in the human body.

The current of such amperage can not hurt, since actually it models the work of the human brain. Many patients after stroke and traumatic brain injury often have impaired work of certain deep brain structures, which are difficult enough to affect. The tDCS method makes it possible to influence locally exactly those structures which functions are disturbed.

The constant current of the minimum amperage helps the development of nervous tissue and the creation of new connections between nerve cells.

WHAT IS THE NOVELTY AND DIFFERENCE FROM OTHERS?

“Neurological clinic of Dr. Yatsenko” was the first in Ukraine to apply this method to help neurological patients.

Our clinic is the leading medical institution in Ukraine, using tDCS method in its therapeutic activities.

In the process of long-term practical work with the tDCS method we developed our own unique treatment plans.

HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?

A special hat with wires is put on the patient’s head. During the procedure, a person does not experience any unpleasant sensations and can be engaged in different interesting activities (watch movies, read, etc.).

WHAT ARE THE RESULTS?

This method is used in Russia for twenty years. “Neurological clinic of Dr. Yatsenko” has successfully used tDCS for the treatment of patients for three years already and is the leader among Ukrainian medical institutions using this method.

Nowadays numerous foreign studies have been carried out, confirming the effectiveness of tDCS (for example, Oxford University study).

“Neurological Clinic of Dr. Yatsenko,” besides the standard tDCS schemes, uses own unique treatment plans. The application of this technique significantly increases the effectiveness of any rehabilitation program – physical therapy, massage, speech therapy and psychological sessions.

HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE?

The course consists of 10 procedures (duration – 40 minutes), conducted daily or 3-4 times a week. The number of courses is calculated individually (on average – 3 courses).

There are no age restrictions.
